Item: M. Rutherford Graphite Wash Portrait
Reference#:6312 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
This is a well-rendered graphite wash drawing (self portrait perhaps?) depicting a man's face half-hidden by his hand. The details are phenomenal in this piece--right down to the small lines and wrinkles on the fingers themselves. A wonderful acquisition for those interested in the fine art of drawing. Framed and matted/under glass. Signed "M. Rutherford" in lower right. Overall size: app. 25.5 X 32". Image size: app. 11 X 17".

Item: Batik on cloth:African-style Architecture
Reference#:6313 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
What a fabulous decorative piece this is! This beautiful batik on cloth is wonderfully preserved under glass, and the frame is absolutely gorgeous--probably made specifically for this piece. The design is very linear and stylistic--it depicts what is probably an African tower--although it could be some other affiliation. We've completely fallen under the spell of this piece and we hope that you will too. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 11.5 X 23.5." Image size: app. 15.5" X 27.5".

Item: Man and woman reclining
Reference#:6310 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
This oil on canvas is a great piece of contemporary art that really encapsulates a wide rainbow of hues and tones--complementing one another nicely to create a cohesive whole. The forms are suggested, yet, upon closer viewing, the artist's academic training really shows through. Some minor wear on the edges of the canvas, but when framed this should no longer be in evidence. Signed on reverse: "Duffey." Overall size: app. 18 X 26".

Item: Joyce Combs: "Fruit Series II Granny Smith"
Reference #:6311 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
This is a very striking mixed media print by Oklahoma artist Joyce Combs, entitled: "Fruit Series II Granny Smith." The piece appears to have been created using a variety of printing techniques--it's the very pinnacle of contemporary art, with its wide array of colors, gold tones, and stylized forms. The literature included contains a brief biography of the artist, as well as a brief explanation of her various techniques (see image). Beautifully framed/under glass. Some chips on frame--mat foxing. Overall size: app. 27 X 30". Image size: 15 X 19".

Item: Annette Boyd: Pines at Commercial Hotel
Reference #:6306 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
This is a captivating oil on board, depicting a pine grove painted in a unique, imaginative style not seen in most landscapes from the 1950's. The colors are unconventionally bright, as is the composition. The thick application of paint and the clever brushwork also indicate that the artist really know what she was doing. Written on the reverse is: "Pines at Commercial Hotel Greencastle Indiana. Annette McPaul Boyd. Painted this year 1954." Signed in lower right. Wood frame. Overall size: app. 18.5 X 22". Image size: app. 15 X 19".

Item: Caricature of young boy in profile
Reference #:6307 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is one of the better carnival/fair-style caricatures we've personally seen--the hair and style probably place this piece in the 1950'2 - 1960's range chronologically. The noble art of caricature has been with us from the days of Pompeii through the current age. The rendering on this piece place it head and shoulders above most that we've seen. The mat has some foxing but the drawing itself is in good condition. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 16 X 19". Image size: app. 9 X 11".

Item: Butter Churn Print
Reference #:6308 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a beautiful framed print that would be ideal for your kitchen, or any other room in your home for that matter. A very illustrative rendition of two generations hard at work at the butter churn while their white cat notices something off the surface plane. The colors are lush and gradient and much attention was paid to smaller details, such as the dishes drying by the open window--you can almost feel the warm spring breeze flowing in. Own a magnificent print that you and yours will be sure to appreciate for many years to come. Framed/under glass. Overall size: 27 X 35". Image size: 18.5 X 27".

Item: Civil war period Buffalo Soldier charcoal
Reference #:6305 Channel: Art
Status: Sold
This piece has a dual function: a work of fine art due to the masterful charcoal rendering and the studied composition, and a wonderful piece of history as well--a portrait of a decorated officer who was most likely a post-Civil War "Buffalo Soldier" (a nickname given African American calvary by the Comanche). Own a piece of history today. Ornate wood frame (a few chips)/under glass. Overall size: app. 23 X 27". Image size: app. 15.5 X 19.5".

Item: Carol M. Hershey: "Dean of Women"
Reference #:6301 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is an amusing smaller print depicting a stern, cartoonish portrait: the Dean of Women. If one studies the artist, one can gain a greater appreciation for the various printing techniques and processed she employs. Hershey is a graduate of Cornell University -- ('61, B.A.), and also holds a degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design. She has participated in a wide variety of exhibitions during her lengthy career. This signed print would make an excellent addition to your collection, or a great gift for the Dean of Women in your own family. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 7.5 X 9.5". Image size: app. 4.25 X 5.25."

Item: Hawaiian Beauty
Reference #:6304 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a fantastic naive piece of folk art rendered in a primitive, charming style. What Gauguin would have been painting had he lived a bit longer, this oil on board would make a wonderful addition to your folk art collection, or your gallery. One can almost hear the ukuleles and the soft lull of the Pacific waves. The surface area has a small spot of discoloration on the lower left-hand side. The wood frame has some chipping. Artist unknown. Overall size: app. 26.5 X 20". Image size: app. 17.5 X 23.5".

Item: William Thon Print
Reference #:6254 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
WILLIAM THON is an important American painter who for almost 60 years has made his personal vision of boats, harbors, and woods known to everyone who follows Maine painters and painting. At the age of 94, his new work has sparked yet another period of active acquisition. Beginning in the late 1940's, Midtown Galleries in New York City handled Thon's work and his successful career for over 50 years, during which time, the book WILLIAM THON, THE ARTIST AND HIS WORK was published in 1964 by Viking Publishers. The Caldbeck Gallery carries both older works that came back to Maine after Midtown Gallery closed in New York City, as well as transitional paintings and recent work in black and white. Thon received the Prix de Rome in 1947 followed by a Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome where he later served as Artist in Residence. He holds an honorary Doctor of Arts from Bates College and is a member of The American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters as well as the National Academy of Design. He has been awarded innumerable prizes. His work is in over 60 museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Hirshhorn Museum, The Butler Institute of American Art, The Columbus Museum of Art, and in Maine, The Farnsworth Museum, The Portland Museum, and The Ogunquit Museum of Art. This print is 34"x32".

Item: Vasselli Frigate Battle
Reference #:6208 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a color-drenched, emotionally charged oil on canvas depicting two classic-style frigates locked in mortal combat. You can almost smell the sulfur of the cannon smoke and hear the roar of the captain as he barks commands. The colors are very rich in this piece--they really draw the viewer's eye across the surface plane. The forms of the ships themselves are stylized and blend in nicely with the rest of the tumult. Wood frame (some chipping). Overall size: app. 20 X 23.5". Image size: app. 11.5 X 15".

Item: Ladies feeding seagulls on the beach
Reference #:6209 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a unique marine oil on board with an extremely heavy use of impasto-style application of paint. It's a nice vacation style depiction of maids on the seashore, feeding the gulls. The colors are very muted and lend themselves greatly to the marine theme of this piece. A lovely painting for your vacation home or for your own home when you wish you were on vacation. Artist unknown. Oil on board. Framed. Overall size: app. 19 X 22". Image size: app. 15 X 19".

Item: Edna Eberhart: "Forest Fire"
Reference #:6206 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is an extremely unique, bizarre oil on canvas board from 1969. It depicts an unforgiving forest fire in all its blazing glory, as it consumes an ocean of pines and firs. Eberhart really captured the intensity of the flames and even the way they blacken the sky around them is authentic. A charming piece of naive, primitive art. Framed. Overall size: app. 19 X 24.5". Image size; app. 21 X 27".

Item: Doris Baugh Bridge with Trees and Water
Reference #:6207 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
A lovely pastoral print showing a cottage by the water's edge, flanked by a bridge. This piece is signed in pencil: "Doris Baugh" and also has printed on the surface: "Paris Etching Society NY USA". The colors in this print are extremely vivid and the etching is superb. A great addition to your collection of fine art prints. Image size: app. 12 X 17". Apparently the Paris Etching Society was very active in distributing prints and etchings mainly after works of French and Flemish artists. Some Paris Etching Society prints are circulating, but nevertheless, hardly anything is known about them. It is possible that this was an association of professional etchers. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 19 X 24".

Item: John Martinez "La Boheme"
Reference #:6204 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a highly stylized print, based on the Murger/Puccini play: "La Vie de Boheme"--an inspiration for both "Rent" and "Moulin Rouge". The image, by artist John Martinez, has a definite Victorian/1920's/Aubrey Beardsley feel to it. The nice, bold colors and simple shapes would really make this print stand out on your home or gallery wall. Framed and matted/under glass. Overall size: app. 21.5 X 24". Image size: app. 6.5 X 10".

Item: Oval-shaped portrait
Reference #:6205 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a rustic oil on canvas board portrait with a definite Bellows aura about it. A piece of history as well, this piece depicts a sitter in profile dressed in 18th century clothing. Great attention to detail was paid to the creases in the face and the filigree collar. But what's really unique about this painting is the oval frame--once a popular surface shape--which isn't used a whole lot these days. Gilded frame. If anyone recognizes the German inscription on reverse, please don't hesitate to contact us. Overall size: app. 25 X 20". Image size: app. 15 X 20".

Item: Young barefoot girl print
Reference #:6200 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is an enchanting print, possibly from the "roaring twenties" that is somehow reminiscent of artists such as Maxfield Parrish. It depicts a barefoot girl kneeling (praying?) gazing intently at something beyond the surface plane. This is an extremely delightful portrayal of the value of innocence. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 9.5 X 13". Image size: app. 9 X 12.5".

Item: Lawrence Hawthorne poetry print
Reference #:6197 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a charming print, depicting a rustic country cottage with its inviting gate wide open, welcoming you home. Everything about this cottage is quaint--even the accompanying birdhouse matches. The original work from which this print was derived appears to have been an extremely detailed engraving, however, the artist's signature in the lower left is illegible. It appears to be part of a set, with its sister print in our collection (ref. # 6210), by the artist: Miro. This piece, like the Miro print, also features a poem by Lawrence Hawthorne: "Though pleasant are the many trails. Of life we chance to roam, We always turn with happy hearts To find the path to Home." Framed, matted/under glass. Overall size: app. 10.5 X 12.5". Image size: app. 6 X 8".

Item: Mountain Landscape oil on board
Reference #:6198 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is an electrifying oil on board landscape flanked by a range of misty mountains in the background. It has the initial appearance of being a folk art piece, yet the techniques used, under closer scrutiny, do have an academic quality. The thick application of paint on the foreground foliage complements the nearly invisible brushwork used for the mountains, which are almost suggested as existing, rather than being as overbearing. A truly admirable work of art for your home or collection. Wood frame. Artist Unknown. Overall size: app. 15 X 18.5". Image size: app. 12 X 16".

Item: Howard Bradford silkscreen: Towan (?) Towson
Reference #:6199 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a kaleidoscopic silkscreen print by listed Plein Aire artist Howard Bradford. It depicts a regatta (at Towan (?) Towson (?) If anyone out there knows, please send us an email--thanks!) amid an otherworldly red sky. This silkscreen is extremely stylized, yet retains a sense of charming incredulity. Howard Bradford remains an integral part of the California Plein Aire scene. He was educated at Chouinard, Jepson Art Institute, and the San Fransisco Art Institute. His works are also in permanent collections both in the United States and Europe. He is also listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in America. Two of the artist's personal statements are as follow: "My point of departure as a painter is directed essentially to things around me: the sea, mountains and the landscape in general. Sometimes I bring nature into the studio." AND "Although I am essentially a studio painter, Plein Aire excursions are part of trying to extract some organic intensity I experience. Distillation of personal observations into a cohesive and singular statement have been my intention for many years." Framed/under glass. Signed and titled in pencil on artist's rag paper. Overall size: app. 19 X 23". Image size: app. 11.5 X 14".

Item: Frederick Manning: Mother and Child
Reference #:6196 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
A beautiful Art Deco style print, reminiscent of Maxfield Parrish, this piece plays on the traditional theme of mother and child, with a definite 1920's - 1930's feel. The subject looks almost like a "flapper" from the roaring 20's--only this one has settled down a bit and is now almost Madonna-like in appearance. A wonderful print for your collection of pre-depression-era art. This print does have some staining and could use a cleaning. Wood frame (some chipping)/under glass. Overall size: app. 15 X 19". Image size: app. 14 X 18".

Item: Matrunick Watercolor: Cars in a Yard
Reference #:6185 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
The contrast between the soft colors and the harsher dark lines in this painting is superb. The setting is a neighborhood front yard, with several cars parked beside a two-story house. Great attention was paid to features such as the trees and the sparse area of sky in the background, but what really makes this piece stand out is the artist's use of dark lines--outlining the cars and the house. The use of lines such as these is unconventional in oil or acrylic painting, however, in the hands of a watercolor artist who really knows what he or she is doing, this method can lead to a resounding success--as it does here. Signed in lower left: "Matrunick". Framed and matted/under glass. Slight foxing on mat. Overall size; app. 15.5 X 21". Image size: app. 11.5 X 17.5".

Item: Karen Wahl oil portrait
Reference #:6186 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a well-executed oil on canvas portrait by Columbus Ohio artist Karen Wahl. She really seems to have captured the intensity of her subject's gaze and overall demeanor. Her brush technique is very masterful, as can be seen in features such as the hair and facial tones. The background also serves to add to the fiery spirit of this painting. No frame. Overall size: 16 X 18".

Item: Kate Holston Carpenter (1866 - 1947) Coastal
Reference #:6188 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
What a beautiful goache painting! The operative word for this painting seems to be: "work". Everyone in the scene is busy doing something, from the man returning home from a long day in his boat, to the woman hanging her washing beside the house. In the center foreground, a young lady has dropped what she is doing to communicate with her baby--taking a brief respite from her own daily tasks. A sophisticated representation of a simpler time and place. Kate Holston Carpenter (1866 - 1947)was an artist and illustrator living primarily in New York, she was born in London and studied in New York at the National Academy of Design. She also studied in Paris with Benjamin Constant and with Josef Israels in Holland. Give this fine painting the fine home it deserves today. Framed and matted/under glass. Overall size: app. 18 X 25". Image size: app. 12 X 19.5".

Item: Orlando dark figural painting
Reference #:6187 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is one of our larger paintings, at approximately 28.5" X 52.5"--it's also one of our most expressive. The techniques employed, coupled with the subject matter, work to create a European flair--almost hearkening back to the German Expressionist painters such as Kirchner and Nolde--or even Edvard Munch: the "father of Expressionism." The figures appear anguished, but the somber palette and "slashing" brushwork add a definite undertone of delicate, fragile beauty as well. Wood frame. Oil on canvas. Again, overall size: app. 28.5 X 52.5". Image size: app. 23.5 X 47.5".

Item: Edith Fout Bell: View From Hospital
Reference #:6189 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is one of those works you don't have to search to long and hard to confirm -- a detailed provenance is right on the reverse! This oil on board was painted by Mrs. Eric Bell of Athens Ohio in 1960, and presented to Dr. Wiyiarch. The painting is a view from what was, apparently, her hospital room, and shows the majestic grandeur of the beautiful forests of historic Athens County. The trees are arrayed in full autumn dress--a lovely series of golden and red hues. The painting itself appears to have been created by a studied hand, yet retains a touching naive charm. Oil on board. Wood frame (some chipping). Overall size: app. 21 X 28.5". Image size: app. 16 X 24".

Item: Italian Print of Kittens Playing
Reference #:6194 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This shellac-brushed print on board is nothing if not cute. The subject matter is straightforward enough: a mother cat watching her young at play, but the artwork itself is deceptively involved--realistic rendering, nice earthy colors, and a classic composition. And the frame is an added bonus--beautiful black and gilded wood. Overall size: app. 14 X 16". Image size: app. 7.5 X 9.5".

Item: Eastern Hemisphere: Map of Discovery Print
Reference #:6184 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a great piece of navigation art with fantastic elements--Like something out of "Baron Munchhausen" this map of the Eastern Hemisphere is flanked by a wind giant, an irate Norse storm giant and their human counterparts, desperately seeking the boundaries of the new world. Expand your own horizons by purchasing this fine print today. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 17 X 19.5". Image size: app. 16.5 X 19".

Item: A Boy and His...Deer (?)
Reference #:6192 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a very vibrant and detailed watercolor depicting a human figure alongside what appears to be a deer, mule, or horse (you make the call) amid nature in her full glory. The colors and brush techniques used in this piece are very studied, yet not academic--they retain a certain naive, childlike charm that is absent in many academic-style works. Yet, the artist knew what he or she was doing, as is evidenced by details such as the reflections on the stream and the surrounding foliage. Artist unknown. Wood frame/under glass. Overall size: app. 17 X 22.5". Image size: 10 X 16.5".

Haystacks in Field: Gauche on paper
Reference #: 6193 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
beautiful gauche or watercolor painting that doesn't shy away from an unconventional palette, this painting is one of our more striking water-based painted works. It depicts a field full of haystacks under a tumultuous purple sky. It is signed and dated in the lower right. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 15.5 X 18.5". Image size: app. 10.5 X 14".

Item: "Lee" (?) "Li" (?) Miro Lawrence Hawthorne
Reference #:6210 Channel: ART

This is a charming smaller print depicting a millwheel chugging away atop a placid stream. A nice engraving-style piece that would make an excellent addition to your collection of pastoral works or fine art prints. The colors used on this piece are simply vibrant and fabulous. Signed in pencil in lower right: "Lee Miro" or "Li Miro". Also includes the following poem by Lawrence Hawthorne: "Through all the changes of the years The faithful brook flows on, Just as true friendship will remain. When other joys are gone." Item: P.E. Lambier "Montmartre Place Du Tertre"
Reference #: 6183 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
A lovely watercolor depiction of the heart of the Montmartre quarter of Paris. A nice, purposely-sketchy rendition, driven home by the masterful application of various gradations of muted, yet vibrant, hues. This work most likely began life as a study in the city which has become the Alpha and Omega of all fine art. Sig. in lower left--title in pencil. Wood frame/under glass. Overall size: app. 8 X 9.5". Image size: app. 14 X 15.5".

Item: Rouen De La Grosse Horloge
Reference #:6191 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
An extremely detailed, extremely fine, printed rendition of the architecture of the famous city on the Seine. The most important secular building in Rouen is the Palais de Justice, once the seat of the exchequer and, later, of the Parliament of Normandy. It is in the late Gothic style and consists of a main building flanked by two wings. The left wing, known as the Salle des Procureurs, was erected in 1493 and is remarkable for its lofty barrel-roof of timber. South of the Palais de Justice is the Porte de Ia Grosse Horloge, an arcade spanning the street and surmounted by a large clock of the 15th century with two dials. The Tour de la Grosse Horloge, which rises beside the arcade, was built in 1389. The tower known as the Tour de Jeanne dArc was the scene of her trial, and is all that remains of the castle built by Philip Augustus early in the 13th century. The Porte Guillaume-Lion, opening on to the Quai de Paris, is a handsome gateway built in 1749. The detail on this print is nothing short of amazing--a fine example of architectural rendering, and a fine piece of art as well. Unfortunately, the artist's pencil signature is illegible--the title is flanked by a watermark (see image). Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 12.5 X 16.5". Image size: app. 7.5 X 11".

Item: S. Tyrwhitt-Drake Explorer with Flag
Reference #:6201 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a beautifully-painted porcelain piece signed in the lower right: "S. Tyrwhitt-Drake." It depicts an explorer (perhaps Sir Francis Drake) surveying his latest conquest. This piece is colorful and vibrant--the artist really made the most of the medium--the colors really complement one another. The details, such as the figures in the background and the grass the subject is standing on, also work well to make this picture take on a life on its own. Wood frame. Overall size: app. 11 X 16". Image size: app. 8.5 X 13.5".

Item: "Banhuti" (?) Banhutig (?) vase of flowers
Reference #:6202 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a beautiful rendering of the traditional floral still-life theme. It's a smaller oil on canvas, but the size is a positive thing in this case. The shellac used on the surface plane really gives this painting a lovely sheen which makes it stand out from the rest. The colors used appear to have been well-thought-out beforehand and complement one another effortlessly. A great addition to your collection of floral paintings or other fine art. Signed lower left: "Banhuti g" (?) Overall size: app. 8 X 10".

Item: R. Cohagen Mountain Landscape
Reference #:6203 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
A lovely mountainscape oil on canvas board rendered in a primitive naive style, this painting by R. Cohagen would make a wonderful addition to your collection of folk art, landscapes, or other fine paintings. Item: "Bell" oil on board: Meadow Brook
Reference #:6179 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a wonderful depiction of a lovely meadow stream--not quite a bubbling brook; it's too still for that--complete with reflections of the foliage on the bank. A nice array of colors--a different palette than the artist's other works in our collection (ref #'s: 6177 and 6178). This would make an excellent addition to your collection. Signed in lower right: "BELL", and inscribed on the reverse: "To Doris Ellwood--From Paul Ellwood--1943". White wooden frame--a few chips and crackling on surface plane. Overall size: 9.5 X 11.5". Reference #:6180 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
A lovely street scene by renowned Ohio artist Shawn Savage (1968-), this colorful oil on board depicts what appear to be three generations of women...and a somewhat reluctant member of the opposite sex. Savage has, apparently, since moved on to operate a gallery in California. Painted in an extremely unique style, using some of the most absolutely vibrant colors we've ever seen, this painting would make a sound investment for any beginning or advanced art collector. Wood frame (gilded). Signature and date in lower right. Overall size: 13.5 X 16". Image size: 7.5 X 9.5".

This is a lovely oil painting on board that has an almost pastel appearance--lush vibrant colors and a great eye for perspective. A truly wonderful painting--this one deserves a second and third glance merely to take it all in. As mentioned before, a great sense of perspective--the horizon vanishes into the water with ease--offset by the bold green of the grassy hillside in the left foreground of the plane. A true classic. Wood frame (gilded). Artist unknown. Overall size: 16 X 18.5". Image size: 12 X 14.5".

Item: A. Jorgensen Jungle Landscape 1940
Reference #:6182 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
An unorthodox painting in a very unorthodox size--this Norwegian landscape with huts would make a fabulous addition to your collection. Like a Hawaiian shirt come to life, this oil on canvas depicts a row of huts, rendered in an extremely thick impasto, beneath a tumultuous sky. Shades of "Heart of Darkness"? Signed in the lower right: "A Jorgensen". Reverse info. in Swedish. No frame. Overall size: 16" X 47".

Item: Country Cottage oil on canvas
Reference #:6175 Channel: ART

What a lovely pastoral work of art! This oil on canvas is probably from the first half of the twentieth-century. An architecturally-masterful representation of a thatched-roof cottage, this beautiful painting would absolutely stun any visitors to your home, office, or gallery. One can get lost for hours in this one. If you need a little getaway, lose yourself in this painting. Unfortunately, there is some edge wear, and a small tear in the lower left-hand side--but these could be easily repaired. No frame. Artist unknown. Overall size: 26 X 35.5".

Item: R. Cohagen Lighthouse Scene
Reference #:6176 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a nice little oil on board with a nautical theme. Depicts a lighthouse beacon towering over a few small houses on an island. Luckily, the sea is calm and all the storms are at bay, so the sailboat approaching the island should have nothing but...well, smooth sailing. This work has a definite childlike quality, but tempered by the artist's definite working knowledge of color and composition. Nice wooden frame--reminiscent of driftwood. Overall size: 8 X 9.5". Image size: 5.5 X 7.5".

This oil on canvas was executed in a primitive, naive style, yet contains (as do most naive paintings) an overabundance of dynamic human spirit. A nice portrayal of ducks leaving a pond, this painting is sure to be a big hit with fans of wildlife art, as well as lovers of primitive works, or maybe the sportsman in your family. The brushstrokes used are nearly invisible in some places, yet a buildup of paint was used on the foliage and on the waters edge. Wood frame (a few chips). Overall size: 22 X 25". Image size: 21 X 24".

Item: R. Roddy plaster wall hanging: Captain of the Guard
Reference #:6173 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a very unique, very heavy, wall hanging. Made from plaster, or perhaps concrete, this armed guard is ready to stand sentry in your home or gallery. A great conversation piece, as well as a great work of art, this wall hanging sits inside a deep wooden frame. The figure itself is in relief and is life-sized. The piece is signed "R. Roddy" in the lower right-hand corner. There are a few chips missing, most notably on the nose of the figure. However, these could be easily repaired. Overall size: 22 X 25". Image size: 21 X 24".

Item: Western Landscape: Santa Fe (?)
Reference #:6171 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a nice, muted mountainscape painting that is unobtrusive enough to be displayed anywhere, yet the masterful brush techniques employed will demand full attention once noticed. The artist is unknown, but he or she seems to have been mindful of Japanese landscape scroll painting. A Western take on an Eastern tradition. Wood frame (gilded). A few nicks on surface plane. Overall size: 23" X 28". Image size: 18" X 22.5".

Item: "Pablobs" (?) "Poblabs" (?) "Pablo" (?) Floral
Reference #:6172 Channel: ART
Status: Sold

This is a beautiful floral work, printed on textured board. Great attention seems to have been paid to features such as the sweeping lines along the petals and the reflections in the glass dish. A very extensive palette and wonderful sense of design were utilized in the creation of this print. The ornate, gilded wooden frame serves to greatly enhance the overall effect of this stunning image. A great addition to your collection of floral prints. Unfortunately, the signature in the lower left is illegible and partially obscured by the frame. Wood frame (gilded). Overall size: 26.5 X 32.5". Image size: 21 X 27.5".

Item: New Orleans (?) Street Scene Watercolor
Reference #:6170 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a nicely-executed contemporary watercolor, in an attractive frame (matted) under glass. This painting is classic enough in appearance for any collector's wall, yet it is also planted firmly in the world of contemporary art as well. It depicts a group of friends walking down a city street, beneath canopies and street-lamps. Unfortunately the signature in the lower right is illegible. However, the artist definitely had formal watercolor training in addition to possessing innate painting skills. Wood frame, matted/under glass. Overall size: 22.5" X 26.5". Image size: 9.5" X 13.5".

Item: Cattle Wading in Pond Print

Item: Young Woman in Turban Print
Reference #:6166 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
Just what is she smiling at? With a grin as enigmatic as the Mona Lisa herself, the young subject of this print is sure to brighten any room. With a turban to match her colorful personality, she appears to have been plucked from a station in time and deposited in our own. A great investment for any collector of fine art prints. Wood frame/under glass. Artist unknown. Overall size: 11.5 X 12". Image size: 11 X 11.5".

Item: Impasto-style landscape miniature: Pennsylvania
Reference #:6167 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is an extremely interesting piece of fine art. Don't let its size fool you--there's more to this painting than meets the eye. Examine it closely and notice the masterful brushwork and thick, impasto-style application of the paint. Taking the "less is more" philosophy which many great artists do, the creator of this painting used mere blocks of color to suggest a landscape that has more depth and spirit than do many others ten times its size. This is one of the finest landscape paintings in our collection, and at 4.5 X 6", you can't say you don't have the room. Give this fine painting the fine home it deserves. Unfortunately, there is a minute chip missing from the lower left-hand corner of the surface plane, and the edges are a bit rough, but this could be easily restored. No frame. Again the dimensions are 4.5" X 6".

Item: Amusa (?) Amasa (?) Saks painted circus-themed
Reference #:6164 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This fired plate, manufactured by Saks Fifth Avenue, has the appearance of having been hand-painted with a vibrant, almost day-glo palette. The front features a ringmaster, taking two of his feline wards to task. The subjects are rendered in a childlike, naive hand--this is not to suggest the artist was untrained--just the opposite. The awe-inspiring childlike quality of this piece is nearly impossible to duplicate. Yet, it's been rendered here. The plate itself is an extremely hardy piece of stoneware, not likely to break too easily. The artist's name on the front is partially-legible: may be "Amusa" or "Amasa". Written on the bottom is the word: "Carwevale." Approximately 11.5" in diameter.

Item: Harbor Scene
Reference #:6136a Channel: ART

This painting would look great in a harbor or bay-front home. Fisherman are returning home from a long day with their nets. The street seems to blend right in with the water behind it. It's a beautiful day, very warm, bright and sunny with puffy white clouds all around. Very mute colors and unique perspective of buildings. There are a few people enjoying the afternoon on the streets. Inset in a gilded wooden frame with some small chips and cracks. Approx. 17 x 13 1/2.

Item: Tavern scene oil on board
Reference #:6157 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This little painting is absolutely charming. Very smooth, almost invisible, brushwork--appears to be a print until you examine it closely. This tavern scene depicts two drinking buddies signaling for their bevvies to be "topped off". Classic style is reminiscent of Dutch painters such as Franz Hals. At under 12 inches, we're sure you can make room for this little gem before someone else does. A great work of art and a fabulous piece of history as well. Framed. Overall size: 9 X 10.5". Item: John Rogers Winter Day in New England Print
Reference #:6153 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
Come one, come all to a little place we like to call Snowy Town and stay or stare, forever. John Rogers who was born in 1929 is a landscape and marine artist known to capture settings in the Massachusettes and New England Areas. Obviously attracting attention to the quiet warmth of a small town the composition of this print is its strength. Slightly soiled, could use a good cleaning and needs to be tightened or pressed because the print is wavy from age. Approx. 16 ½” x 13 ½” overall and the image is 11” x 8 ½”

Item: Myron Ward Desert Street Scene
Reference #:6147 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a very innovative oil on canvas--perhaps a building somewhere in the Middle East. Thick application of paint--the artist "built" the layers of color upon one another to create the end result. A working knowledge of color composition also went into this painting--the hues are numerous and wisely used, yet the overall muted composition serves to enhance the theme, and the subject matter. Little is known about the artist, except that he was associated with mostly landscape works. Some crackling on surface plane, and a couple of chips gone from surface plane, but this is normal for a painting of its age. Wood frame (a few chips). Sig. in lower left. Overall size: 22" X 30". Image size: 20" X 28".

Item: Alice M. Dutton Watercolor Landscape
Reference #:6146 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This watercolor is definitely a mood piece--sets a certain tone, perhaps of past vacation evenings, or future ones. The colors compliment one another fabulously in this painting, and the brush technique is superb--the ripples in the water are extremely life-like, and appear to move of their own accord. What little that is known about the artist is as follows: Alice Muzzey Dutton was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts August 2, 1862. She was the daughter of Benjamin Dutton, a ship builder and Harriet Small. Alice was best known for her watercolors. She lived in Boston, New York City and Miami Beach. Possibly a Florida Highwaywoman (roadside) artist from the 40's and 50's. There is no record that she married, and she probably died without issue. The last record of her was on the 1930 census in New York. A great choice for anyone interested in watercolor art, American art, or just fine art in general. Wood frame/under glass (a few chips). Overall size: 10" X 15". Image size: 9" X 14".

Item: Simon Paul Baus Baby Portrait

This incredible masterpiece by Simon Paul Baus is truly the one of the finest portraits we have seen in a long time. This adorable baby is dressed in his Sunday finest and seems to gaze directly ahead while he is being immortalized for years to come. The painting has been professionally restored and handsomely framed. The back reads "The Glosson Art Galleries Cincinnati". Simon Baus was born in Indianapolis, and except for a few trips to the Southwest, he spent most of his life in his native city. This is a masterful painting, rendered in an almost photorealistic manner, from 1949. The subject is a nubile, lovely young lady, who looks somehow reserved and determined at the same time. Item: Lucien Gautier: signed print of Notre Dame
Reference #:6122 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is an outstanding piece of fine art by the French artist Lucien Gautier (1850-1925). Gautier was a fine French etcher and designer, who first studied art in Aix-en-Provence under Marius Reynaud. He then completed his education in Paris, under Gaucherel. He began his career there etching and engraving plates after the designs of Corot and Charles Jacque. By 1875, however, Gautier had emerged as an original etcher of note. His fine art received medals and awards in France in 1884, 1894 and 1900. This particular piece shows the oft-rendered cathedral at Notre Dame: one of the most famous images ever. The detail that went into each tiny crevice, window frame, and arch is nothing less than astounding. The proportion and scale are incredibly accurate, and the depiction is amazingly faithful, down to the statuary flanking the apses. Own a piece of history by purchasing this signed print today. Signed in pencil in the lower right-hand corner. Some staining on the paper--some chipping in the wood frame (under glass); otherwise this print is in great shape, considering its rich provenance. Overall size: 21.5" X 31". Image size: 17.5" X 27".

The artist had a lot of patience and expert hand control to paint in such fine detail. "Handcolor" is written on the bottom lower left hand corner and it is signed "P. Peterson" on the lower right hand corner. Professionally framed and matted in a white wooden frame. Approx. 8 1/2 x 11.
