WILLIAM THON

everyone who

age of 94, his new

yet another period

Beginning in the
late 1940's,

career for over 50
years, during which
time, the book
WILLIAM THON, THE

was published in

Caldbeck Gallery
carries both older
works that came
back to Maine after
Midtown Gallery
closed in New York

transitional
paintings and
recent work in
black and white.
Thon received the
Prix de Rome in
1947 followed by a
Fellowship from the

Rome where he later
served as Artist in
Residence. He holds
an honorary Doctor

What a
beautiful goache

operative word for
this painting seems
to be: "work".
Everyone in the
scene is busy doing
something, from the
man returning home

woman hanging her
washing beside the
house. In the
center foreground,
a young lady has
dropped what she is

nothing if not

| This is a very vibrant and detailed watercolor depicting a human figure alongside what appears to be a deer, mule, or horse (you make the call) amid nature in her full glory. The colors and brush techniques used in this piece are very studied, yet not academic--they retain a certain naive, childlike charm that is absent in many academic-style works. Yet, the artist knew what he or she was doing, as is evidenced by details such as the reflections on the stream and the surrounding foliage. Artist unknown. Wood frame/under glass. An
extremely detailed,
extremely fine,
printed rendition
of the architecture
of the famous city
on the Seine. The
most important
secular building in
Rouen is the Palais
de Justice, once
the seat of the
exchequer and,
later, of the
Parliament of
Normandy. It is in
the late Gothic
style and consists
of a main building
flanked by two
wings. The left
wing, known as the
Salle des
Procureurs, was
erected in 1493 and
is remarkable for
its lofty
barrel-roof of
timber. South of
the Palais de
Justice is the
Porte de Ia Grosse
Horloge, an arcade
spanning the street
and surmounted by a
large clock of the
15th century with
two dials. The Tour
de la Grosse
Horloge, which
rises beside the
arcade, was built
in 1389. The tower
known as the Tour
de Jeanne dArc was
the scene of her
trial, and is all
that remains of the
castle built by
Philip Augustus
early in the 13th
century. The Porte
Guillaume-Lion,
opening on to the
Quai de Paris, is a
handsome gateway
built in 1749. The
detail on this
print is nothing
short of amazing--a
fine example of
architectural
rendering, and a
fine piece of art
as well.

artist's pencil
signature is
illegible--the

Examine it closely
and notice the
masterful brushwork
and thick,

paint. Taking the
"less is more"
philosophy which
many great artists
do, the creator of
this painting used
mere blocks of

more depth and

its size. This is

This is a very
innovative oil on
canvas--perhaps a building
somewhere in the Middle
East. Thick application of
paint--the artist "built"
the layers of color upon
one another to create the
end result. A working
knowledge of color
composition also went into
this painting--the hues are
numerous and wisely used,
yet the overall muted
composition serves to
enhance the theme, and the
subject matter. Little is
known about the artist,
except that he was
associated with mostly
landscape works. Some
crackling on surface plane,

this is normal for a

This
watercolor is
definitely a mood
piece--sets a
certain tone,
perhaps of past
vacation evenings,
or future ones. The
colors compliment
one another
fabulously in this
painting, and the
brush technique is
superb--the ripples
in the water are
extremely
life-like, and
appear to move of
their own accord.
What little that is
known about the
artist is as
follows: Alice
Muzzey Dutton was
born in
Newburyport,
Massachusetts
August 2, 1862. She
was the daughter of
Benjamin Dutton, a
ship builder and
Harriet Small.
Alice was best
known for her
watercolors. She
lived in Boston,
New York City and
Miami Beach.
Possibly a Florida
Highwaywoman
(roadside) artist
from the 40's and
50's. There is no
record that she
married, and she
probably died
without issue. The
last record of her
was on the 1930
census in New York.

American art, or
just fine art in
general. Wood

Simon Paul Baus is
truly the one of
the finest
portraits we have
seen in a long
time. This adorable
baby is dressed in
his Sunday finest
and seems to gaze
directly ahead
while he is being
immortalized for
years to come. Mr.
Baus was very
skilled and this
can be seen in the
baby's distinct
features including
deep blue eyes,
plump red cheeks,
delicate hands and
fine blond hair.
The painting has
been professionally
restored and
handsomely framed.
The back reads "The
Glosson Art

Baus was born in
Indianapolis, and
except for a few
trips to the
Southwest, he spent
most of his life in
his native city. He
received his first
instruction in
drawing under Otto
Stark at Manual
Training High
School, and later
he entered an
evening class
conducted by
William Forsyth.
Upon the opening of
Indianapolis Art
Association's
school, Baus
studied with Adams,
Forsyth and Stark,
continuing there as
a part-time student
until 1911. Baus
painted many
notable Indiana
people during his
career as an
artist, which he
supplemented
financially by
working in the
Indianapolis Post
Office as a postal
clerk for
forty-five years.
He had works shown
at the following
exhibitions:
Wanamaker exh,
Phila., 1909
(prize); PAFA,
1915; Indianapolis
AA, 1919 (prize);
Chicago Exh. Am.

He was also
involved in major
undertakings by 15
Indiana painters of
the time including
the mural
decoration of the
Burdsall units in
the children's ward
of Indianapolis
City Hospital and
was considered one
of the finest
figure and
landscape painters
of the era. In
1966, Baus moved to
Kent, Ohio, where
he died three years
later. Image size

This is an
outstanding piece
of fine art by the
French artist
Lucien Gautier
(1850-1925).
Gautier was a fine
French etcher and
designer, who first
studied art in
Aix-en-Provence
under Marius
Reynaud. He then
completed his
education in Paris,
under Gaucherel. He
began his career
there etching and
engraving plates
after the designs
of Corot and
Charles Jacque. By
1875, however,
Gautier had emerged
as an original
etcher of note. His
fine art received
medals and awards
in France in 1884,
1894 and 1900. This
particular piece
shows the
oft-rendered
cathedral at Notre
Dame: one of the
most famous images
ever. The detail
that went into each
tiny crevice,
window frame, and
arch is nothing
less than
astounding. The
proportion and
scale are
incredibly
accurate, and the
depiction is
amazingly faithful,
down to the
statuary flanking
the apses. Own a
piece of history by
purchasing this
signed print today.
Signed in pencil in

Some staining on
the paper--some
chipping in the

this print is in

| An arresting, very unique oil on canvas by Kent, OH. artist GW Roberts, Jr. Roberts is an artist and sign maker, who also executes commissioned artwork using many different media. This Pittsburgh, PA native began his artistic journey when he was eight years old, with his first scholarship to attend the Carnegie Institute Tam O'Shanter art classes. Upon completion at fourteen, Roberts moved on to attend the pre-college programs at both Carnegie Mellon University and the Philadelphia College of Art. Upon his high school graduation, Gerald received another scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design, where he received his BFA. This particular painting depicts a simian sitter, in standard portrait pose, with a muted, classic background. This paining is an original--halfway between wildlife art and portraiture. The masterful technique is traditional enough to blend in anywhere, but the subject matter will most certainly be noticed anywhere this piece hangs. Sig. in lower R. Metal frame.
